Sadé Smith welcomes the opportunity to talk about Jamaican food, culture and the writing process by way of a presentation tailored to her book:

GRANNY’S KITCHEN: A Jamaican Story of Food and Family

Written by Sadé Smith & illustrated by Ken Daley

Recommended for Grades K-3

Sadé Smith is available for in-person and virtual author visits and live readings for grades Kindergarten to grade 5. She is also available for writing workshops for students of all ages. Sadé is available for school, library and community events.

This collaborative presentation includes:

  • Author introduction and background / biography

  • Introduction on writing / inspiration for the book

  • Showing of the Shelly-Ann doll to be passed around (depending on size and age of group).

  • Topics about family, Jamaican food, language, culture and fun facts.

  • Fun activities involving live props (and/or a digital presentation, if virtual) of cooking utensils, equipment, Caribbean foods and fruits. (Guess the name of the food/fruit/kitchen items). This is a fun and educational way for the readers/students to learn about new things and foods that they may not know about.

  • Learn some Jamaican Patois! This allows children to learn about new cultural differences in language.

  • A live reading of GRANNY’S KITCHEN followed by a Question and Comment period.

  • Social media handles and website / contact information. Information on where and how to purchase the book. Information about upcoming books and projects.

  • Information about the “Kidz Korner” tab on www.sadetsmith.com website where students may find fun activities and download reading and writing templates for their own use.

  • Students will receive a bookmark with a bonus recipe on the back. (Bookmarks may be mailed out to schools afterward for virtual presentations).

  • Note: Presentations may be split into two parts with a short break in-between to accommodate for a younger audience if necessary.

JULIE AND THE MANGO TREE

  • Fun activities involving the many varieties of mangoes around the world and Caribbean fruits. (Guess the name of the Jamaican fruit). This is a fun and educational way for the readers/students to learn about new things and fruits that they may not know about.

  • Learn some Jamaican Trivia! A trivia game called How Much Do You Know About Jamaica?

  • A live reading of JULIE AND THE MANGO TREE followed by a Question and Comment period.

Writing  Workshop

Sadé Smith welcomes the opportunity to discuss the writing process by way of a presentation tailored toward a writing workshop. This writing workshop is recommended for Grades 3-8, however, it can also be catered toward a younger audience upon request.

Sadé Smith is available for in-person and virtual writing workshops for students of all ages. Sadé is available for school, library and community events.

This writing workshop includes:

  • Author introduction and background / biography

  • Introduction on types of book and genres

  • Introduction on writing a book

  • Ideas to find inspiration for writing a book

  • An in-depth step-by-step tutorial on the basic fundamentals of writing a children’s picture book using the Writing Templates format from the “Kidz Korner” tab on www.sadetsmith.com

  • Let’s write a story! The students will write a short story together by using the Writing Templates and what they learned from the step-by-step tutorial. Students/classes may continue illustrating the book(s) and putting it together on their own time as a class assignment after the workshop.

  • A live reading of GRANNY’S KITCHEN or JULIE AND THE MANGO TREE (if time permits) to show the conclusion of following the steps in the tutorial.

  • Question and Comment period.

  • Social media handles and website / contact information. Information on where and how to purchase the book. Information about upcoming books and projects.

  • Information about the “Kidz Korner” tab on www.sadetsmith.com website where students may find fun activities and download reading and writing templates for their own use.

    Note: Writing Workshops are best suited for students in older grades (3 and up), however, can also be catered toward a younger audience. Basic Writing Templates available on the “Kidz Korner” tab are suitable for all grade levels.

School / Library Presentation Details

  • Format:

    In-person - 60 minutes (maximum 4 classes per day)

    Virtual - 45 minutes (maximum 4 classes per day)

  • Presentation Details:

    To encourage interaction during in-person presentations, Sadé would prefer to meet with smaller groups at a time with a maximum of 4 groups per day.

    Note: In-person workshops are 60 minutes in length and may be split into two parts with a short break in-between to accommodate for a younger audience.

  • Equipment Required:

    • One small table for display, presentation items and materials

    • Separate table and chair to accommodate for book sales and signings (if requested)

    • Computer with projector or television screen for displaying digital PDF copy of book and/or PowerPoint presentation from a USB drive or laptop

    Note: Author will bring all required decorations and props needed for presentation.
